Tacho Signal Converter

This is a tachometer signal adaptor / converter module. It is used to convert the frequency or type of tacho signal, providing an output to drive a tachometer designed or calibrated for a different number of cylinders, or designed to work with a different type of signal.

These modules are designed and assembled myself, I can provide 100% after sales support and assistance. It includes detailed printed instructions, making installation very straight forward.

A small case size (80x40x20mm) makes its easy to find a location to mount it. It can even be mounted directly to the wiring loom with cable ties.

How does this work?

  • It receives either a DC square wave or AC voltage input - from the existing tacho signal, a hall or inductive sensor, or an ignition coil.
  • It provides 3 types of outputs:
    • A DC square wave with 50% duty cycle, selectable between 5v or 12v pull-up voltage.
    • A 12v square wave with an inductive voltage spike, the same as an ignition coil (for older model tachometers).
    • An AC coupled output for tachometers designed for inductive type sensors / AC voltage signals.
  • The speed / frequency conversion is selected by a combination of 4 switches, as shown in the included instructions.
  • An additional trim pot is used to provide a further +/- 10% fine adjustment to the frequency conversion.
  • Alternatively, the trim pot can be used to manually select an output frequency from 0.1x to 8x the input frequency.
  • "Multi-fire filter", for use when the ignition coil input signal fires multiple times per cycle at idle (eg. Ford Barra engines).
  • The module has 7 wires (power, ground, 2 types of input, 3 types of output), only 4 of these wires are used for most applications.

Disclaimer
  • Note that this will not work with current triggered tachometers as found on some very old vehicles. They will however work with much more common voltage triggered tachometers.
