approximately 1,000 A.D. while
the handle and connection is likely from a 18th - 19th century tribe. The axe head is
a smooth, black colored river stone, notched on one side to fit the wood handle. Tightly wrapped, sewn animal material, most likely
intestine, is used to meld the parts together. One face of the axe head is worn where it would have met a floor surface which could be evidence that it was placed in a secure location for a very long time. Overall, the axe is in good condition regarding
its age. There are chips and divots throughout the piece along with mild patina that suggest age. The
axe head is about 6” in length while the overall length is about 1’-10”. Although
the exact origin is unknown, the axe head was most likely created by a Southwest Native American Pre-Contact tribe around what is now Southern Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Northern Mexico. Similar axe heads comprised of dark, smooth river stones have been discovered in these areas and the axe was acquired (not discovered) around Houston,
Texas. Provenance: Houston Museum of Natural Science, Southern Historical Antiques, Antique American Indian Art LLC and Cisco's Gallery.
