A great way to get rid of some of the single use plastic in your kitchen, these are some of our favorite reusable flexible silicone bowl covers and lids. Made of FDA approved food grade silicone these covers are washable, microwave safe and great for use in the refrigerator. They can be tossed in the dishwasher, but honestly they are so easy to hand wash you probably wont need to. We have three colors available, Lemon (yellow), Lime (green) and rose (pink). They are about 7" in diameter, so they are perfect for small bowls, dishes and glasses.
Uses: The primary use of this product is to cover bowls dishes or cups in the kitchen. But we have found they are useful in many other ways!
How to use: To get the best seal, make sure the edge of your bowl is dry and clean. Oil and water make it difficult to get a good tight seal. Start with the edge closest to you and stretch the silicone lid away from you, working around the edge to create a seal. Give it a little burp before you seal your final edge to get the tightest seal. When a tight seal is not needed just tuck them inside of a bowl or dish instead of sealing them around the edge. In our experience in our own kitchen it is easiest to get a good seal from the Lemon and Lime because they are circular. The Rose is a little more difficult to seal because of the decorative scalloped edge, but it makes the prettiest ruffled edge once applied.
Why we love it:
This product is a great example of a little thing that can make a big difference. It wont solve all your kitchen storage needs, but you will find that there are many times that you will be able to skip the single use cling wrap in favor of this reusable product. And every time you make that choice you are keeping single use plastic out of our landfills and oceans. It doesn't cost much and it's easy to use! That is what makes this one of our favorite little things!
Things to note:
-We love the environmentally friendly nature of this product. HOWEVER they will come shipped to you in individual poly envelopes. Trust us when we tell you that this is for the best. We want your Silicone Lids to arrive clean and fresh and the packaging is necessary to ensure that this happens. The envelopes peal open easily and we recommend that you reuse them to store your covers after use, or to store any other item you can think of. Just don't allow them to become garbage.
-We notice that many listings focus on the spill proof seal that you can achieve with these lids. Getting a spill proof seal is possible, but it really requires a good clean edge with no oil or water in contact with the silicone. We don't worry about that when we use this product. Instead we use it in the same way you would use single use cling wrap. It covers food and keeps it fresh, but we never assume that it will not spill if it tips over in the back seat of the car.
-Silicone is tough, but it can be ripped or torn. Please keep your covers away from knives, scissors are especially pointy fingernails! These things are not its friend! You will know when you are stretching the silicone past is comfort zone because the color will become faint and turn white as it stretches. Don't ask more of it than it can handle. These are small lids for small plates. We are testing some larger products that we hope to introduce soon.
