WASHINGTON QUARTERS State Collection 1999-2003 Volume 1 H.E. Harris & Co. Serving the Collector Since 1916 1999 Marks the beginning of an exciting time for coin collectors. In January 1999, there began a ten-year celebration of the 50 states. A series of five quarter dollars will be included each year with distinctive reverses showing designs symbolic of each of the 50 states. The quarters are being released in the order that each state became part of the United States and will be issued each year from 1999 through 2008. The obverse design is a modification of John Flannagan's George Washington quarter design. The word LIBERTY has been moved from the obverse top border to the field in front of Washington's chin and IN GOD WE TRUST from that location to the field behind the first president's neck. The mint mark appears on the obverse near the bow. The designation QUARTER DOLLAR and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA were moved from the reverse to the obverse, and the year of minting or issuance was moved from the obverse to the reverse side. A special law was enacted to allow for these changes. The circulating commemorative quarters are being produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Quarters dated 2002 to 2004 an be collected in Whitman Statehood Quarters folder Number Two. The Washington quarter was first issued in 1932, the 200th anniversary of the birth of our first President. It was designed by John Flanagan, whose initials JF appear on the truncation of the bust. John Flanagan designed the Washington Head Quarter. His initials JF are on the truncation of the head. Letters S and D are mint marks: S, San Francisco; D, Denver; no letter, Philadelphia. The mint mark appears below the center of the wreath on the reverse side. Below each opening is shown the quantity minted. Quarters dated before 1948 may be collected in the Washington Quarter folder Number One. . Coins dated after 1965 may be collected in folder Number Three and Four.
