Print Specifications: Photographer: Man Ray (American born, 1890 - 1976) - Considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century Man Ray lived most of his life in Paris, France. Best described as a modernist, he was a significant contributor to both the Dada and Surrealist art movements. While he produced major works in a variety of media, he is best known today for his avant-garde surreal imagery. His darkroom manipulated images, photograms and surreal compositions cemented his place as one of the most important figures in photographic history. Subject: Nancy Cunard (England) - English heiress to the Cunard shipping fortune who moved to Paris in 1920 and joined the avant-garde circle that included American expatriate Man Ray. Cunard was a restless and creative soul, renowned for her exotic beauty and her many affairs with famous men. Although she went on to become a prolific poet, publisher, journalist and social activist, she will always be most remembered as the stunning femme-fatale captured in Man Ray's portraits. Cunard was also well known and remembered for her sense of fashion and style with the arm or wrist "bangle" becoming her trademark accessory, often wearing multiples on both arms. The large finger ring was apparently a favorite as it appears in other photographs of her during this time in Paris. Adding further uniqueness to this piece is Ray's choice of early color process, as Man Ray in spite of being the "experimenter" forever pushing the edge of photographic technology, for the most part shunned color during the 1920's and 30's - making this one of the few color examples of his work during this time (he would later embrace color in the mid 1950's).
