Catappa leaves also known as Indian Almond Leaves come from the Terminalia catappa tree. They have chemical healing properties that may naturally help fight off mild bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections. Therefore, these leaves are great for many different types of livestock including bettas, shrimp, community fish, and more.
In nature, Terminalia catappa leaves will fall into rivers and other bodies of water and will tint the water a rich brown 'tea' color as they break down. This is due to chemical compounds found within the leaves called tannins. For this reason, Catappa leaves are often used in black water setups to achieve deeper brown-colored water and for leaf litter on the bottom.
Adding catappa leaves to your aquarium can benefit your fish in a number of ways. First and foremost, when you add catappa leaves to your water you will notice that the water changes color. This is because the leaves are leaching tannins into your water. This can lower the pH of your water.
In addition to that, catappa leaves are known to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects.
These benefits have been known in Asia for many years; for example, the use of the leaves is popular with Betta breeders.
In more recent years, the scientific community has caught up by carrying out their own studies which have confirmed what hobbyists and breeders have long believed to be true: the leaves do protect from bacterial and fungal infections!
But that isn’t all, catappa leaves also provide a food source for fish! As the leaves break down, they are often enveloped by a biofilm that can provide food for fish. Apistogramma fry and small plecos find this especially palatable.
To make things less confusing for you, here’s a list of the fish species that could benefit from Indian almond leaves:
The "generally accepted" dose for these leaves is subjective, at best. That's typically like 1-2 large leaves (we're talking like 5" plus) for every 15 gallons (approximately)...there is no real "rule of thumb", other than recommendations derived from users over the years.
Yes, they will stain your water a tea-like color. This is because as the catappa leaves decay, they leach tannins.
Notice the brown stained water of this black water stream. You can recreate this environment by adding catappa leaves to your aquarium.
If you’re keeping fish from black water conditions, they will most likely enjoy the darker tint to the water. Overly bright tanks can make some fish nervous, especially Apistogramma species.
