This embroidered tapestry is a beautiful example of Kalaga art from Burma (Myanmawr) or Northern Thailand. It depicts an elephant - a symbol of good fortune - surrounded by 12 signs of the Zodiac. Hand-worked with silver and gold threads and adorned with sequins, beads and glass stones - it is hard to imagine how many hours were devoted to making this sensational item. The date of creation is unknown but is thought to be 1940s to 1950s

All the images are padded and sewn on to the background, giving a 3-D effect (see photo no. 10). The embroidery is incredibly detailed and uses metallic threads of many colours, including gold and silver. The tapestry measures 94 cm x 94 cm and is sewn on to a hessian-style backing. It is intended to be hung on a horizontal pole or could be framed.

For postage, the item is surprisingly light - less than 2 kg - and as can be seen in the last photo, it folds into a cube roughly 32 cm x 32 cm x 8 cm
