Schrimshaw Replica by Artek •Whaletooth Bookends • Liberty & Peacock Le Epervere

This listing is for a pair of bookends that are a detailed reproduction in resin of a Scrimshaw etched sperm whale’s tooth.  One side features Liberty and the other side features Peacock Le Epervere.

Created by Artek of Antrim, New Hampshire, USA, this is an authorized, realistic copy of the original Scrimshaw piece that is owned by the Peabody Museum of Salem, Massachusetts.  Made of resin, this replica is true to the original, even retaining the cracks that can be seen at the base.  It was made as part of the Save the Whale Collection promoted in 1970s and 80s.

Artek has produced under license a line of faithful reproductions of historic scrimshaw from several eminent museums.  These reproductions are known for quality in detailed craftsmanship and are popular among collectors as well as among those concerned about preservation of whales and other sea life.

The “Artek” replica marking probably appears inside the tooth.

The replicas are in excellent condition.  There is minor loss of finish on the wooden bases.  The bottom of each bookend is covered with a skid-proof protective rubber-like material.
