Description
English alabasters represent a unique contribution to medieval art. Although firmly rooted in the European tradition of Christian iconography they remained, even at the height of their popularity, the work of local craftsmen in local stone. Stories from the New Testament and The Golden Legend were the most favored subjects, and the numerous examples surviving the churches and museums throughout Europe attest to their wide appeal.
