This would have been part of a Victorian or Edwardian lady's dressing table set. Whenever she brushed her hair, she would have pushed the loose combings into this pot. When she had enough, the hair would be made into a 'rat'. These were sheer hair nets that were stuffed full of the collected hair and then sewn shut. This would then be inserted into a hairstyle, adding volume and fullness
