Kirk Mangus 1952-2013

Was a prolific artist, whose work defied restrictive formal boundaries and navigated an array of traditions and practices celebrated as a master ceramicist. Mangus worked across multiple disciplines including painting, drawing, and sculpture, and it is nearly impossible to separate one practice from another. Mangus‘s work is characterized by his simultaneous use of traditional ceramic practices with contemporary subject matter and style, blended together with his unique levity and spontaneity… quote by James Cohen

His murals, works in clay, on paper, in wood, And other media Paul from a rich and diverse set of influences: Ancient Greco, Roman art, mythology, Japanese woodblock prints, comic books, folk stories, from meso American through Middle Eastern and Asian ceramic traditions as well as the people he saw, the places he traveled, and his own dreamworld. He loved experimenting with new mediums, local materials, clay bodies, slips, kiln building and the firing process.

Mangus was head of ceramics at Kent State University from 1985 till his death in 2013. His collections both in ceramic clay murals and drawings are displayed in museums and galleries worldwide.

This drawing has been in my collection since 2017. Drawing is in excellent condition framed in a gold metal frame. The back of the Drawing has the previous auction tag top left from 1993. It also has Kirk Mangus seal and address in Kent Ohio. This is an exquisite and rare piece of history. It evokes a dark, yet mythical example of the collections he created. Drawing is signed by artist on the bottom, Mangus.
