From the pattern:  Corset covers were an essential part of a woman's underclothing.  They protect the corset from rubbing on the bodice of the dress.  It was easier to replace a corset cover than the dress bodice.  Corset covers also provide additional modesty when wearing gauzy summer dresses by preventing the chemise from showing through the sheer fabric.  They stop the corset from showing when wearing a lower cut ball gown or evening bodice.  A corset cover protects the corset from soil and dirt from the outside, unlike the chemise which is meant to protect the corset from the body oils and dirt.  Corset covers also hide the bones of your corset giving you a smoother look.  If you do not wear a corset, but instead wear a modern bra, a corset cover is essential to hide this fact.

This pattern gives you a corset cover using two methods of construction.  Style A uses a simple casing and drawstring at the neckline similar to those seen here.  The drawstring allows you to fit the neckline to you body.  Style B uses a round of beading eyelet and ribbon instead of the casing.  Again it allows you to adjust the neckline to suit your body.  Either style can be made with or without sleeves depending on your personal preference, the desired use of you cover and the Era you wish to portray.  Both use a drawstring at the waistline for additional fitting, instead of darts.

Fabric Requirements:  2 2 1/2 yards 45" wide cotton. Five 3/8" mother of pearl, glass bone, or other white period button.  1 package single fold bias tape (you can make your own, instructions are included).  Style A:  1 1/2 yards 1/4" wide double faced satin ribbon.  Style B:  1 to 1 1/2 yards of beading eyelet, similar amount of ribbon to fit eyelet.  1 1/2 yards 1/4" wide double faced satin ribbon for drawstring or 1/4" cotton twill tape.
