Product Details: The Beefeater of British Royalty TOBY JUG #D6206 Signed H. Fenton ESTATE FIND
This iconic Royal Doulton offering features a large Character Jug depicting bodyguards of the British Monarchy known as as "Beefeaters." Actually referred to as Yeoman of the Guard this iconic troupe is composed of former officers and sergeants of the British services and in their scarlett and gold state dress with a white neck ruff and and Tudor bonnet form a guard of honor inside Westminster Abbey during coronation. The term "Beefeater" most likely originated from the time when these guards of primarily of the Tower of London prisoners and the Crown Jewels were paid as part of their salary with "chunks of beef".
"The Beefeater" (copyright 1946) was modelled by Harry Fenton. Character jugs are typically earthenware, a ceramic which is modelled from clay then hand decorated and glazed and fired. This piece was signed by the designer and is backstamped with the classic Royal Doulton symbol (Lion standing on a crown) Made in England.
The subjects of the jugs are very varied, from nautical heroes to literary stars, but the one thing they all have in common is top quality modelling with excellent detail. An excellent addition to any fine collectdion!
