Bell System invested in high quality tools for its employees and Utica Drop Forge & Tool Company was one of the contract manufacturers. Their 242-6 Diagonal Cutters were among the tools provided for Bell System technicians.

As is expected of Utica products, the Diagonal Cutter works properly; blades meet correctly and do not show significant notching (see images). The Red Rubber Handles show wear, but not evidence of abuse or misuse (see images). The Pivot moves smoothly and easily with  minimal friction. Neither the Stripping Notches nor  the Sleeve Grooves have been compromised.

Dating the Cutter is a best guess; probably after 1957 into early 1970s. This relates to the manner in which Utica stamped its name and Utica’s manufacturing facility’s eventual move from New York to South Carolina. A lengthy discussion about this can be found on Alloy Artifacts.

The Diagonal  Cutter could be put to work or added to a show-and-tell collection. Both Utica and the Bell System have histories worth preserving and acknowledging.

We will ship the 242-6 by USPS First Class Mail on  the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
