This is an original painting recently completed by the artist (me) in 2022. It is done in acrylics on a canvas board that measures 8 by 10 inches. This painting does not come in a frame. The subject is Saint Guinefort. Guinefort was a dog who lived in the Middle Ages, in France. His master, a knight, went hunting one day, leaving his baby under the protection of Guinefort. When the knight returned home, he found the baby's room in disarray--cot upside down, with no baby in sight. When Guinefort greeted his master with blood on his muzzle, the knight assumed Guinefort had devoured the baby, and immediately slew Guinefort. Moments later, the baby's cries could be heard. The knight overturned the cot, found the baby unharmed lying next to the corpse of a snake. Guinefort had killed the snake to protect the baby. The knight was heartbroken. He and his wife buried Guinefort's body in a well and decorated it with stones, creating a shrine for the noble dog. Local people came to honor Guinefort and asked for his mercies for their own children. In Guinefort's name, they also honored other "spirits" of the forest, especially deer. Though Guinefort has never been officially recognized by the Church, he continues to be beloved, and is a patron of infant children and dogs. Winning bidder pays postage.
