The item for sale is a bronze dual inkwell that features a sculpture of a lioness that was created by the Austrian sculptor Friedrich Gornik (1877-1943)  The bronze was cast in Austria and bears the AR mark of the Aust-Reich foundry. The bronze platform is marked "Made in Austria".  There is a signature of Gornik as well.  The inkwell was probably made in the early twentieth century as it has an "Art Deco" appearance with a smooth streamlined modelling of the lioness rather than a detailed realistic depiction.  The two inkwells have glass insets in them.  The onyx base has beautiful concentric banding in shades of olive green.  It is truly remarkable and a fascinating compliment to the bronze sculpture.  There is a pen tray in the base. One of the bronze feet on the bottom has been replaced with a modified steel ball bearing as shown in photographs 11 and 12.  The patina on the lioness is variable from light yellow brown along the spine and back to darker brown on the sides and extremities. There are some superficial scattered minor scratches on the lioness that do not detract from the appearance but are mentioned for sake of completeness of the description.  The overall length the with of the inkwell is 15 1/2" x 8".  The length of the lioness is 9".  The height is 7 1/2".  The weight is 15 lb 4oz.
