THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK

A HISTORICAL DETECTIVE INVESTIGATION

(HARRY THOMPSON)

Why was the Sun King, Louis XIV, the most forceful man in Europe, obsessed by a faceless prisoner?  What was the terrible secret that the King kept locked in an iron mask?  What secret could be so important that the King would kill to preserve it?  Who was the Man in the Iron Mask?

The Man in the Iron Mask was no legend, though his story was told in a famous novel by Alexander Dumas.  His strange fate presents perhaps the greatest ‘whodunnit’ of all time, but it is a detective story without a criminal and without a crime.

Marshalling all the facts and stripping away the legends that have grown up over the centuries, Harry Thompson takes us, step by step, to a strange solution and yet, in the light of the evidence, the reader may judge it to be well proven.

This 1987 edition hardback publication is in very good overall condition.  The pages are tightly bound and are free from tears, creases, and significant marks other than some light age-related discolouration to the pages.  The dustjacket displays some light rubbing and minor knocks to the edges and corners (see photograph).  The book runs to 187 pages (21.5cm x 13cm) and is illustrated with an additional 8 pages of illustrative plates.
