About Indonesian Moss Agate |
: |
Moss Agate is a semi-precious gemstone formed from silicon dioxide.
Moss Agate - Chalcedony containing dense inclusions of green Hornblende that cause the pattern to resemble moss. Moss Agate is technically not a true Agate as it lacks the banding.
Moss Agate like the name suggest exhibits a moss like pattern and is of a greenish color. The coloration is not created by any vegetative growth, but rather through the mixture of chalcedony and oxidized iron hornblende. Despite its name, Moss Agate does not contain organic matter.
It is a form of Chalcedony which includes minerals embedded in the stone, forming filaments and other patterns suggestive of moss, fern-like patterns, vegetation, landscapes and underwater worlds.
The field is a clear or milky-white quartz, and the included minerals are mainly oxides of manganese or iron. It is not a true form of agate, as it lacks agate's defining feature of concentric banding.
Moss Agate is of the white variety with green inclusions that resemble moss. It occurs in Indonesia and many other locations. Moss Agate is usually formed from weathered volcanic rocks.
The colors are formed due to trace amounts of metal present as an impurity, such as chrome or iron. The metals can make different colors depending on their valence (oxidation state).
