This listing is for the 2023 Baby set produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. There are 5 coins this year - each in brilliant uncirculated finish. One of each of the normal coins plus a special loon dollar coin in this set is unique and is not available in any other set. The obverse is also unique -- read below! You could give this as a gift. Included is an envelope for you to put the card in and you could even mail it if you like.
SPECIAL REVERSE AND OBVERSE:
Since
the Queen died in 2022, the mint needs to prepare an official effigy of
King Charles and that takes time. In the meantime coins for 2023 have
to be minted and they have decided to use an altered obverse with Queen
Elizabeth's bust on it for now. At some point in 2023 maybe they will
switch to using coins with a King Charles obverse? Or maybe that will
be in 2024? There is historical precedent for adding an extra symbol or
altering a reverse or obverse for a year when there is a shortage of
coins or the monarch dies mid-year. For example the 1947 maple leaf
coins that indicated that the coins were actually minted in 1948. Also
in 1936 with Edward VIII abdicating in December, the mint added a dot on
the reverse of the 1937 minted coins (and continued to use the 1936
date).
Here is the mint's official comment on the obverse logo for 2023:
As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II. Instead, we are offering a collector’s edition of these annual issues that have been struck in limited numbers. These are non-circulation coins, meaning they are legal tender but not intended for general circulation. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
