Treasure Island

When he attends a dying patron of his family's boarding house, young Jim Hawkins has no idea that the man was once a pirate, or that the man's possessions include a map that will lead whoever has it to the island where the notorious buccaneer, Captain Flint, buried his treasure. Jim and his guardians hire a boat to sail to the island, unaware that crew they have hired includes many members of Flint's pirate band, among them former quartermaster Long John Silver, and that they hope to claim the treasure for their own. The ensuing action-packed adventure established the classic pirate story as it was written for more than a century afterward, and it made the literary reputation of its young author, Robert Louis Stevenson.

King Arthur

When the young age Arthur pulls from the stone an embedded sword that none of the knights of the kingdom can budge, his future as the King of England is foretold. This imaginative retelling of the classic Arthurian legends recounts the story of Arthur's formation of the Knights of the Round Table, his securing of the enchanted sword Excalibur, and his wooing of the Lady Guinevere. Included as well are the legends of Sir Pelleas, the story of Sir Gawaine's pursuit of the White Hart, and tales of Merlin the magician, Morgana Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and many others.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

When Professor Pierre Aronnax and harpoonist Ned Land join an expedition to hunt a fierce "whale" that has been sinking ships, little do they expect that they will soon become captives of Captain Nemo, a self-exiled renegade who prowls the sea in his magnificent submarine, the Nautilus, seeking revenge against the civilized world that he feels has betrayed him. Aboard the Nautilus, Aronnax and Land are introduced to an undersea world that is mysterious, marvelous, and exhilirating, and have extraordinary adventures among the flora and fauna of the ocean. First published in 1870 as one of Jules Verne's "Extraordinary Voyages," Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is revered as a landmark of science fiction and a classic tale of wonder.

Robin Hood

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood tells the classic tale of the mischievous Master of Sherwood Forest, who lives the outlaw life with Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet, and his band of Merry Men, bedeviling the implacable Sheriff of Nottingham during the reign of Richard the Lionhearted. This edition features more than 40 full-color illustrations by author Howard Pyle that bring the timeless text to life.

A Journey to the Center of the Earth

Accompanied by his nephew Harry and his guide Hans, Professor Von Hardwigg follows directions in a coded message left by sixteenth-century alchemist Arne Saknussemm to the crater of the volcano Sneffels. There they descend into a subterranean world that is home to marvels from the prehistoric past that could never exist in the world above ground. One of his styled "extraordinary voyages," Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth is a masterpiece of adventure that has never been out of print since it was first published in French in 1864. This edition of Verne's novel features more than 50 full-page illustrations by the distinguished artist Édouard Rio.
