Gunter’s or surveyor’s chain is a chain made of metal or steel wire, invented in the early 17th century by English mathematician Edmund Gunter for measuring distance, and comprising 100 wire rods connected by small rings. Each rod+ring unit is 1 link (7.92 inches), making a total chain length of 66 feet, the length of a cricket pitch.
