This is a superbly carved wooden Japanese bear shown prowling on all four legs while growling, circa 1940s.

It has lovely colour and patina with areas of wear highlighted by their lighter tone, providing evidence that this is an early example from Hokkaido. The carver has captured the delicate beauty of an actual bear's coat of fur. The bear is posed in such a way that it oozes character and charm, and because of its relatively large size can be displayed on the floor as well as on a table top.
