Rare antique medieval small (approx. 1" tall with solid bale) two-sided Cross pendant featuring ancient "budded" design with the crossbar ends composed of three round shapes or "buds". In a Christian context, such a design could symbolically represent the Holy Trinity similarly to the three-leaved clover or Shamrock. One side of the centerpiece is composed of four similar "buds that could symbolize the four Evangelists in the center of the Savior’s Cross. The other side of the centerpiece has a globular shape, which is a rare version of medieval crosses of similar design. Such pendants are usually dated c.12-13th century (please see the last two pictures for a reference). They are believed to have traveled across Europe during the Viking Age, a period of Nordic military, mercantile and demographic expansion via the trade route called "From the Varangians to the Greeks" connecting Scandinavia, Baltic countries, Kievan Rus and the Byzantine Empire.
