Prior to and during the First World War, Poland was not an independent country, but was a part of the Russian Empire. After a successful campaign by the Central Powers, Germany occupied the northern part of "Russian Poland", while Austria occupied the southern part.

"Germania" stamps of the Reich overprinted Rußiſch Polen (Russian Poland) in Fraktur script.
