Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper
Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper,
later renamed Leslie's Weekly, was an American illustrated literary and news
magazine founded Dec 1855 and published until 1922. It was one of several
magazines started by publisher and illustrator Frank Leslie.
Throughout its existence, the weekly
provided illustrations and reports—first with wood engravings and
daguerreotypes, later with more advanced forms of photography—of wars from John
Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry and the Civil War until the Spanish–American War
and the First World War.
Surviving issues today are highly prized
as collectors' items for vividly depicting American life during the seven
decades of its existence. Many distinguished writers were featured in its
pages.
Harper’s Magazine
Harper's Magazine is a monthly
magazine of literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts. Launched in
New York City in June 1850, it is the oldest continuously published monthly
magazine in the U.S. (Scientific American is older, but it did not become
monthly until 1921). Harper's Magazine has won 22 National Magazine Awards.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the
magazine published works of authors such as Herman Melville, Woodrow Wilson,
and Winston Churchill. The magazine has developed into the 21st century, adding
several blogs. Harper's has been the subject of several controversies.
Harper's Magazine began as Harper's
New Monthly Magazine in New York City in June 1850, by publisher Harper &
Brothers. The company also founded the magazines Harper's Weekly and Harper's
Bazaar, and grew to become HarperCollins Publishing. The first press run of
Harper's Magazine—7,500 copies—sold out almost immediately. Circulation was
some 50,000 issues six months later.
The early issues reprinted material
pirated from English authors such as Charles Dickens, William Makepeace
Thackeray, and the Brontë sisters. The magazine soon was publishing the work of
American artists and writers, and in time commentary by the likes of Winston
Churchill and Woodrow Wilson. Portions of Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick
were first published in the October 1851 issue of Harper's under the title,
"The Town-Ho's Story" (titled after Chapter 54 of Moby-Dick).
Harper’s Bazaar
Harper's Bazaar is an American
monthly women's fashion magazine. It was first published in New York City on
November 2, 1867, as the weekly Harper's Bazar.[5] Harper's Bazaar is published
by Hearst and considers itself to be the style resource for "women who are
the first to buy the best, from casual to couture".[6] Since its debut in
1867, as the U.S.'s first fashion magazine, its pages have been home to talent
such as the founding editor, author and translator Mary Louise Booth, as well
as numerous fashion editors, photographers, illustrators and writers.
Illustrated London News
The Illustrated London News appeared
first on Saturday 14 May 1842, as the world's first illustrated weekly news
magazine.[1] Founded by Herbert Ingram, it appeared weekly until 1971, then
less frequently thereafter, and ceased publication in 2003. The company
continues today as Illustrated London News Ltd, a publishing, content, and
digital agency in London, which holds the publication and business archives of
the magazine.
The first issue of The Illustrated
London News appeared on Saturday, 14 May 1842, timed to report on the young
Queen Victoria's first masquerade ball. Its 16 pages and 32 wood engravings covered
topics such as the war in Afghanistan, the Versailles rail accident, a survey
of the candidates for the US presidential election, extensive crime reports, theatre
and book reviews, and a list of births, marriages, and deaths. Ingram hired 200
men to carry placards through the streets of London promoting the first edition
of his new newspaper.
