Description

This is a World War II veteran, “Een Nederlandsch-Indische Gouvernmentsgulden” or “One Gulden” note that was equal to “Satoe Roepiah” or “Satu Rupiah” or 1 Rupee. It was printed in the United States and dated 1943 during World War II.

The “Dutch East Indies”, also known as the “Netherlands East Indies” was a colony consisting of what is now Indonesia. It was formed from the nationalized trading posts of the Dutch East India Company, which came under the administration of the Dutch government in 1800.

On January 10, 1942, the Japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies. The rubber plantations and oil fields were considered crucial for the Japanese war effort. Following the Japanese surrender in August of 1945, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesian independence.
