Germania 2023 Valkyries OSTARA 1 oz .999 Silver Coin Goddess Spring & Fertility

The Germania Mint’s Valkyries series is a tribute to the ancient mythic tradition of Odin’s celestial warrior maidens, who decided the fates of warriors and battle and guided the souls of the valiant slain to a boisterous afterlife in Valhalla. Ostara, the ancient Germanic goddess of the spring and of fertility, is an honorary part of that tradition as she is believed to have been related to the goddess Freyja, who commanded the host of the Valkyries. Her worship has been revived by modern Germanic neopaganism, and the 2023 1 oz Germania Valkyries Ostara Silver Round pays her tribute in exquisitely engraved detail.

The goddess Ostara was also known to the ancient Saxons as Eostre, mentioned by the English monk and historian known as the Venerable Bede in a 9th-century text, and her traditions and myths have been reconstructed by folklorists and scholars since the 19th century. Now believed to have been the source of a custom of springtime feasting that contributed to shape of the holiday we know as Easter, a myth of the goddess transforming an injured bird into a hare is thought to have given rise to the association between eggs and the Easter Bunny. The deer and the hare are identified today with this goddess of regeneration.

The 2023 Germania Valkyries Ostara Silver Round contains a full ounce of pure silver and is available in a secure plastic capsule.

The coin’s obverse side shows Ostara with her sacred animals, the deer, and the hare, and shows her name inscribed above. She wears a simple gown and a floral garland, and the Germanic Berkanan rune of vitality and regeneration appears at her neckline.

The same rune appears in an intricate decorative border on the coin’s reverse, which echoes the design of an ancient German wooden shield with a boss at the center. The boss is flanked by a deer and by the Germania Mint’s double eagle, along with the inscriptions “GERMANIA 2023,” “1 oz Ag 999.9,” and “5 MARK.”
