1910s and early 1920s Arts & Crafts design-era and Bungalow-style partially glazed terra-cotta Gemini zodiac decorative art tile, antique original, never used or installed.

In the early 20th Century, interiors of fine homes in the U.S. were often decorated with colorful, sometimes whimsical art tiles installed in key areas of the house, frequently in hearths, mantels and fireplace surrounds. This original, antique tile depicts the zodiac sigh of Gemini - the astrological "twins" - and was probably part of a set of tiles depicting other zodiac symbols.

This ceramic has a fired background glaze with a shiny, bright blue sheen that contrasts against the raised, unglazed, matte-surfaced "brick orange" terra-cotta tile features. The tile has never been used or installed; the sides and back are clean with no old mortar residue. The smooth, unblemished back of the tile has a contemporary adhesive label leftover from the high-end auction house from which the tile was purchased many years ago. The label is still affixed but can be easily removed with no harm to the stoneware.
