We present a super quality landscape study in oils, with ewes grazing in moorland, signed lower left G R Walker, after Thomas Sidney Cooper RA (British, 1803 – 1902),probably by one of his students of the time.  Cooper was a prolific painter and often employed his students to copy his work, under supervision, and release paintings to clients in his name,  We believe this is one such example.    Born in Canterbury, following his formative years as a sketch artist, in 1823 Thomas Cooper was admitted as a student to the Royal Academy.  Moving to Brussels in 1827 and marrying, he worked under Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven (Belgian, 1798 1881), Cooper returned to London and exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy in 1833.  There followed an illustrious and commercially successful career, with multiple works exhibited at the RA and other venues Britain.  Chiefly associated with genre paintings of cattle, and agriculture in open landscapes and farmsteads, Cooper was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1845 and Royal Academician RA in 1867.  Between 1847 and 1870, Cooper frequently worked with Frederick Richard Lee RA (British, 1798 1879) on several paintings, Lee undertaking the landscapes and Cooper adding animals to complete the scenes.  He was the oldest member of the Royal Academy when, in 1901, King Edward Vii acceded the throne following the death of Queen Victoria.  He was later received by the King in audience and appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) for services to art.  Many examples of the work of Thomas Sidney Cooper RA can be seen on artprice.com, findartinfo.com, artnet.com, bonhams.com, christies.com, sothebys.com, askart.com and arcadia.com.  A significant body of work is in the Canterbury Art Museum collection, with some works at the Tate Gallery in London, amongst other museums and galleries.  Presented in good overall condition in its original frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed.
