Vintage 1920's silk gown
Breathtaking 1920's piece of lingerie :: Sheer and fine silk crepe with the most lovely sheer bodice of Normandy lace :: Tucks below the lace create lovely drape and movement :: LOVE the delicate and miniature pockets made of lace with matching tucks :: Silk ribbon flowers adorn the left shoulder :: Belt loops at the dropped waist (missing the original belt, which was likely a silk ribbon to match the ribbon flowers.)
Normandy lace is the name given to lace that is a patchwork of many types of lace and embroideries, made during or shortly after WWI. Because many of the flax fields were bombed and burned during WWI, there was a shortage of linen thread to make lace. So lacemakers improvised by salvaging and repurposing old laces to create pieces like this. It is made of hand embroidered linen and a mix of handmade bobbin lace and needle laces.
Incredible (and wearable) piece of textile and fashion history!
