Published by Johnson & Fry , New York

Image size is about 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" ( including facsimile of Grant's signature )
Sheet size is about 8 1/2" x 11"
Seated full-length portrait of Ulysses S. Grant at his camp in the field in a folding chair, his hat and battlefield maps on the ground beside him. There are still more maps on a table inside the tent behind the general.
In the background a Union soldier, with his rifle - musket on his shoulder, stands guard.
His back is to the viewer as he looks away into the distance.
The soldier is rendered lightly here - his presence almost like a ghost , representing the thousands of men who died in the war, never to see home again.
------
This is a scarce engraving of General Grant, created from an original painting by Thomas Nast ( 1840 - 1902 ), German-born American artist and cartoonist. Nast was a frequent contributor to Harper's Weekly magazine.
