Basic arms & blazon

Coat of arms of the City of Chester: Plantagenet (Gules, three lions passant guardant in pale or) dimidiating the arms of the Earl of Chester (Azure, three garbs or)

Edward, Lord of Chester, but without the title of earl (1239–1307) became King Edward I in 1272; title Earl of Chester also held by Edward II and Edward III as princes, and by all subsequent Princes of Wales.
