This brass tea/coffee set belonged to my grandmother and most
likely dates from the first third of the last century. I know little about it, but believe it is Mamluk
revival Cairoware that was popular in the late 19th century and
early 20th. It is decorated
with ancient Egyptian motifs in inlaid silver and copper.
The set consists of a 12” diameter tray, a pot (6½” high with a
3½” diameter base), a sugar bowl with lid (4” tall with lid) and 6 pedestal
cups (2¼” high). The pot has a
collapsible handle that can be folded and hooked into the crescent at the top
of the lid to hold the lid open. There
are also 6 china cups in blue, white, and gold that were added by my grandmother
(this is the way I have always known the set). The tray, pot and sugar bowl are marked “Syria” and the china cups are marked Elbogen,
Czechoslovakia.
The set is in good condition with no dents. It has been in
storage for most of the past 40 years and I have not tried to clean it. Two of the china cups have cracks visible
only on the inside.
