Description
This is a scarce, “Dreiling” from the “Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein” the border area between Denmark and Germany. A single year only type, it was struck at the Altona mint in 1850 during the reign of King Frederick VII.
The Danes and Germans each believed they had a claim to Schleswig-Holstein, the population of which was majority ethnic German. In 1848, Denmark tried to formally annex the area. Prussia responded by invading, thus beginning the “First Schleswig War”, which ended in a victory for Denmark and the signing of the 1852 London Protocol. But the fight broke out again in 1864 the “Second Schleswig War”, and this time Prussia and Austria won and the territory was absorbed into Prussia in 1867.
Weight: 4.77 Grams, 25 Millimeters, Copper. Mintage: 200,000.
As a comparison, the famous 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent had a mintage of 484,000 pieces.

The Coin: A nice original example, it saw use and earned some light wear and a few marks. Fully original, it has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
