A fast growing, deciduous, medium-sized tree, up to 18 m (60 ft.) in height, widely distributed in forests throughout the territory of the US, southwestern and southeastern Canada, at elevations between 300 and 1200 m (1000 and 4000 ft.). It develops an extensive, nitrogen fixing root system, a massive brown trunk with scaly bark, pinnate foliage and drooping clusters of showy, perfumed, white flowers. A beautiful ornamental, ideal for temperate climates. For good germination, seeds must be scarified.
