By Introduced in January 1968, the new two-door Ford Escort saloon with square headlamps replaced the 105E Anglia. An ingenious design - small, yet big enough to fit a family and their luggage, coupled with an affordable price tag made it an instant hit. Indeed, Ford sold over two million of them. Its Macpherson strut suspension and rack-and-pinion steering set it at the zenith of the family car market. It also turned out that the Escort was a staggeringly good rally car. Hannu Mikkola’s victory in the London-Mexico World Cup Rally of 1970 was memorable. Illustrated here are four classic Ford Escort AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations) models from the Mark I years, 1968-74.
