Description

This is a crisp uncirculated, interesting and historic, "One Shilling" note of "Japanese Invasion Currency" that was issued in 1942 during World War II for what has become known as "Oceania". These notes were used on the Gilbert and Solomon Islands, New Britain and Papua New Guinea during the time they were occupied by the Japanese.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 the Japanese quickly struck south, invading the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Burma and the Pacific Islands in what they called "The Greater East Asia Prosperity Sphere". Then, they were pushed back, step by step until all this "Japanese Invasion Currency" was rendered obsolete.

"Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (General Issues 1368-1960) by Albert Pick. #2.

Face: OC block letters in red. • Blue on green underprint. • Breadfruit at left, palm trees at right.

Back: Blue. • 1 • Eight of them.

The Japanese issued different "invasion" notes for the Philippines, Malaya and Burma. All are collected, but those notes are seen much more often than these "Oceania" pieces.

The Note: A choice, crisp uncirculated note. It has a minor corner stain from age I expect. No bends, folds, creases, edge or body tears and no pinholes. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
