Dated around 1940 - 70's

Solid cast brass hand painted crest, mounted onto a hardwood mahogany backplate. 

24cm x 20cm x 3cm approx

Good used condition for age and application, with some superficial wear, marks, discolourations and paint chips. some cracks to the wooden backplate. 

HMS Excellent is home to the 'Stone Frigate' Naval Headquarters and front-line training units. Based on Whale Island in Portsmouth Harbour, it successfully blends heritage and history with a modern and progressive outlook. HMS Excellent is a unique shore establishment which has its roots in more 100 years of naval history. Originally housed in a number of hulks named HMS Excellent since 1830, it was formally established in 1869. It moved ashore in 1891 and remained active until 1985, when it ceased to be an independent command and was incorporated into HMS Nelson as part of HMNB Portsmouth. The name continues to exist in reference to the aspects under the site's administrative purview. 

 HMS Excellent is itself part of the Maritime Warfare School, with a headquarters at HMS Collingwood, although a number of lodger units are resident within the site including the offices of the First Sea Lord.
