What is Sisal?

The Sisal is a plant which withstands in prolonged droughts and a high temperature. It loves a strong sunshine and lives as long as ten years. In Thailand, the Sisal plant found a plenty in 2 provinces : Prachuap Khri Khan and Phetburi.

The character of sisal fiber is outstanding in very strong insect resistant. Furthermore, it does not easily decay. As a result of its special qualifications, it is very popular to use sisal fibers to make ship hawsers, metal brushed carpet underlay, mosquito whips and etc.

Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit perceives the benefit of sisal qualifications, strength, durable and not easily decay, which is suitable to make a wickerwork items.
In consequence, as following Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit's command,
the Department of Industry sets up the sisal wickerwork training to provide
the sisal wickerwork occupation group of women.

Bann Hupkraponk in Phetburi province is the only place which makes sisal articles under royal patronage.

How to make a sisal wickerwork product ?

1.Cut mature sisal leaves. Next, use a sharpen bamboo to scratch the fibers from sisal leaves. It is very important for the makers to be careful the liquid of sisal leave. It is harmful and irritable to the human's skin. After getting the fibers from sisal leaves, take it to dry in the sun.

2. Blending dried sisal fibers before braiding them into long plaits.

3. Dye sisal plaits with a chemical color and spread them out in the sun.

4. Soak dried color sisal plaits into a fix color and hand them in the wind

5. Weave or use a machine sewing a ready colorful sisal plait zigzag stitches to work up the shape.

6. Use a scissor or a shaver to trim out small sisal hair and lacquer on. To finish up the work by inspection before delivery.

How to take care?

Clean by using a soft detergent (powder or liquid) with a soft brush. Then, dry in the sun.
