Welcome to my listing of a Unique, Original, Antique, 17th? Century, Oxford University Coat Of Arms, Oak Wall Plaque.

The state that it’s in bears testimony to its age.

Several of the metal tacks around the edges of the plaque appear to have been picked out (what are drunken students like?).

Part of one of the seven book “catches” is also missing.

At some stage plaque looks to have been forcefully removed off a wall hence one of the rear hangers has been replaced with a larger one.

Originally the lettering would have been gilted as faint traces can still be seen.

Roughly translated, its Latin inscription is based on Psalm 27 “The Lord is my light”, Oxford University’s motto.

It’s centrepiece, the unclasped open book likely represents the attainment of knowledge.

The seven Iron clasps are said to either represent the seven subjects of the medieval curriculum or the seven seals mentioned in the Book of Revelation Revelations.

Traditionally, three crowns were associated with King Edmund, the martyr King, King Arthur and Jesus Christ.

Any questions are welcome.

Happy Bidding!
