20thC Chinese Sun Wukong~Monkey King Carved Turquoise Paste/Resin Boulder.

A large twentieth century Chinese carved turquoise paste boulder, depicting Sun Wukong the monkey king amongst temple grounds with mischievous monkey servants making offerings of fruit amongst blossoming trees and rocky outcrops.

A large and intricate boulder stone, made in the 20th century (I don’t know exactly when). I think It is made from some sort of resin/paste - it is very heavy for its size, weighing 2.984 kilos unwrapped.

Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a mythological figure who features in a body of legends, which can be traced back to the period of the Song dynasty. He appears as the main character in the 16th-century Chinese classical novel Journey to the West (西游记). Sun Wukong is also found in many later stories and adaptations. In the novel, he is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. After rebelling against heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha, he later accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a journey to retrieve Buddhist sutras from "the West".

Measuring 21.5cms/8.5" tall by 17.5cm/6.75" across with a depth of 8cms/3.25".
