Antique French WWI Military Issue Treen Etui Necessaire Needle Holder/Sewing Kit

Here on offer is an antique French WWI military issue treen etui necessaire needle holder/sewing kit.

This wonderfully tactile etui is carved on a lathe from boxwood and was issued to French soldiers during WWI. The sewing kit was designed to be as comprehensive as possible, catering for repairs while deployed in the conflict.

This necessaire separates into three pieces, both ends unscrew. The end that resembles a honey spoon, has spools to hold four different colours or types of thread on the exterior. If you unscrew that part, there is fixed inside, a bodkin, stiletto or awl-type tool to punch holes in leather or thick fabric. The part of the case that forms the handle for the bodkin unscrews and reveals a space for storing needles. The rounded ends were useful as darning implements.

Its condition is good antique condition with an age-appropriate patina, everything screws together well. There is a small on the side of one of the thread separators, this does not affect the objects utility.

The etui measures approx. 13cm by 2.1cm at the widest point.

An unusual piece of millitaria, treen or sewing tool, a must for a serious collector.
