Description

This is a large, thick "Sestertius", which was the largest bronze coin from the ancient Roman Empire. It was struck in 244 or 245 AD at Viminacium in Moesia Superior for the Emperor Philip I, called by at least history, Philip “The Arab”.

Born the son of an Arab chieftain who gained Roman equestrian rank, Philip ruled the "Roman World" from February of 244 until he and his son, by then also his co-emperor, Philip II, were killed in battle in 249.

Philip reigned during the period described as the "Military Anarchy and Economic Collapse". He came to the purple by murder and assassination and his reign as Emperor saw lots of war as well as the 1000th anniversary of Rome. He had to fight both the barbarian invaders and the internal rebellions of would-be usurpers like Pacatian and Jotapian. He and his son were killed in battle fighting the last, this time successful, usurper, Trajan Decius.
