Vintage WW2 / WW1 Era Gimbal Compass, Royal Navy Patt 183


This style of compass was used on Royal Navy 'Fast & patrol boats' during WW2. 


Brass, but painted with original British Royal Navy duck egg blue paint, which could be stripped by the purchaser, if required. 


Original 24v integral base light is still fitted in the base, which is rare. 


Dated around 1910 - 1940, Original & authentic, not reproduction. 


Similar to the 0919 and 0115 versions 


Royal Navy serial code marked on the outer case plaque and the top of the compass 6605-99-460-6417 / R/85/SIS/13


I suspect it was manufactured by Brooks and Hawkes Ltd, who were a manufacturer of Ships lamps and compasses etc., but unmarked


Good used condition for age and application, with some wear, discolouration, oxidisation, marks, tarnishing and paint loss.


Working order.


This item may have been fitted with a binnacle mushroom cover originally.
