Here's an early Colonial Period grease lamp from the 1700s....it still has old rag wicks and grease inside!....round with hanger handle.....3 1/2"tall x 4 1/2"long....rough pitted surface. The cover plate has a small piece cracked and about to break off...This lamp would be hung from a small hole in the end of handle. A strip of cloth acted as a wick. Lard or grease was put in the bottom with wick laying on a little raised groove inside the spout....
