This is an old fabric sample book with 70 small swatches pasted on it.

At a time when the economy was not as advanced as it is today, women in farming villages in various parts of the country wove their own cloth.

This kind of sample book(Shimacho) began as a way to memorize the patterns by cutting the resulting cloth and binding it on paper.

Later, merchants began to use them as sample books when placing orders, and their role increased.

In Japan, stripes are called “Shima”, hence the name.
