ROBERT TAVENER - Dillington

A striking limited edition Linocut by the highly sought after Robert Tavener of Dillington House, Somerset which we cannot find for sale elsewhere.

Numbered 40/75, signed in pencil, believed to date from the 80s

Dillington House in Somerset dates back to the 16th century and was once the residence of a former prime minister.  It is operated today as a wedding and events venue by Somerset Council, but is owned privately

Measurements: 51 x 37 cm image

Condition: The work is in excellent condition and doesn't appear to have ever been framed.  The colours are strong.  The only observations I can make on close inspection is a couple of very faint mottling marks to the margin and a couple of small very light handling creases to margin.

Born in London in 1920 Robert Tavener trained in lithography at Hornsey College of Art after army service in World War 2.  He was head of printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design from 1953, later to become vice-principal until he retired in 1980.  He lived in the same house in Eastbourne for 50 years, at the foot of the South Downs, which was to provide him with a continuous source of inspiration for his works. A senior fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, his work is in over 25 public collections. He produced many linocuts, woodcuts and lithographs during his lifetime, but was very critical of his work and destroyed many prints.
