Description
This is a truly astonishing survivor of all the possible mishaps of the last eight centuries. This is a silver “Bracteate” Denier from medieval France. A “Bracteate” is a very thin, bendable, smashable, single-sided coin, used predominantly during the Early Middle Ages.
This one is an anonymous issue, probably, since it pictures an Angel, from the church. Between 1200 and 1262, Strasbourg was governed by the “Bishops of Strasbourg”. This period was marked by a long conflict between its Bishop and its Citizens over the application of ecclesiastical authority and control of administrative offices. After 1262 Strasbourg was ruled as a “Free Imperial City” within the “Holy Roman Empire”. This status was granted by King Philip of Swabia after the Citizens of Strasbourg emerged victorious from the “Battle of Oberhausbergen” in 1262.

The Coin: A coin that was probably part of a hoard and sent in to be authenticated in bulk. Now, as it is an exceptional specimen, it is just crying to be graded.
