In the seventeen-forties and fifties a number of extraordinary innovations suddenly appeared in Delft painting. These developments had a significant effect on Dutch painting of the Golden Age, as is demonstrated by the work of painters who spent varying lengths of time in Delft between 1645 and 1675 - Paulus Potter, Emanuel de Witte, Gerard Houckgeest, Carel Fabritius and Pieter de Hooch, whose names rank among the most illustrious of the century.

This book concentrates on common elements in the work of the Delft artists and shows how they employed similar pictorial means (the rendering of light and experiments in perspective) in three themes - the veduta, the architectural picture and the genre scene – in order to reinforce the illusionary character of the representation.
