Back when we were all little shavers, tin toys were omnipresent. Tin trucks engaged in vast sandbox construction projects, tin spaceships were clutched in small, sweaty palms, tin circus animals and clowns were hurled at siblings, and mechanical tin toys-dancing dolls, racing cars, and drumming robots-were wound up again and again until they broke. As we grew, we left a trail of tiny tin hubcaps, airplane wings, and clown noses half-buried in the dirt of our backyards. Now, as adults, we mournfully recall the toys of our youth, so casually squandered and destroyed. We wish we had them still. And here they are. Teruhisa Kitahara began acquiring tin toys in his childhood and has never given it up. His collection, comprising over 10,000 toys from the 1900s to the 1960s, is the largest in the world and has become a museum. Now Chronicle Books gives you the chance to re-enjoy the toys of yesterday with this exquisitely photographed collection.
